The first day of autumn was just the other day. And the very next day the mid-70s temperatures we'd been enjoying plummetted into the low 60s. With this in mind, as you plan to take your wedding photos, don't forget- it's jacket weather! Most brides will want to go outside with their photographer... and their groom. They'll want to take advantage of their venue's grounds, neighborhood, etc.
Now... jacket weather calls for just a little bit of planning. To start with- don't forget your jacket. Having a jacket will enable you to stay outside a bit longer, getting all the photos you and your photographer planned for. Having that jacket will also mean you won't be shivering in those photos.
Of course, you're not going to want to be wearing your jacket in your wedding photos. That means you're also going to need someone to be there with you,, just out of the shot, holding your jacket for you. Your planner, the photographer's assistant, your best friend, sibling... it's worth planning ahead.
Perhaps you have a jacket that you would like to wear in some photos. It could a jacket with bride on the back, or Mrs. [insert future last name here], or something else personal to you. Below are a few good examples from photo shoots we produced for our magazine.
The photo above is the opening spread to our feature, "Timeless", photographed at the mighty Gotham Hall.
Just before we walked our "bride" outside of the venue to be photographed (with M&V Limo's fabulous '56 Ford Fairlaine), we gave her a jacket with fun custom artwork on the back to wear as our photographer got the shot perfect.
On a not completely unrelated note, with NYBFW upon us - less than two weeks away - the dress in the spread has something we anticipate seeing a lot of on the fashion runways: sleeves.
When we photographed Danielle Cabral and her husband Nate at New Jersey's Liberty House for their magazine feature, "10 Years Looks Good On Us!", of course we planned to take full advantage of the venue's fabulous backyard, with its amazing view of lower Manhattan.
In between shots of Danielle & Nate under Premier Events By Reema's incredible floral installation, the Bravo star kept warm in her cast jacket (from "The Real Housewives Of New Jersey").
Our magazine's second ever celebrity photo shoot for a feature was with "Law & Order: SVU" star Kelli Giddish.- just as she was getting ready to be a bride in real life.
The feature was called "Everyone Loves A Bride". The opening spread (pictured above) was photographed amongst the New York taxis and other traffic on Manhattan's lower Madison Avenue. We photographed Kelli a few times to get the image we wanted - whenever the intersection's light was red. In between the shots, we kept Kelli comfortably warm.
And last, but not least - the photo shoot for the cover of our magazine's first issue, photographed uptown on Park Avenue... on a rather blustery day.
We learned two lessons during that photo shoot; first: taxi cabs look better in photos when they are coming towards the camera, rather than driving away. And, second: don't forget your jacket for your outdoor photos.
FUN FACT: The "bride" in the magazine cover's photo (above) and wearing the Northface jacket in the behind-the-scenes photo at left is Sophisticated Weddings' Editor-in-Chief, Samantha Sendor.
